A very warm welcome to our very own Short Heath Junior blog.

I wanted to create a space so that staff, children and parents can share their thoughts on their favourite books and authors. I will try and update this as much as possible and hope to have some much needed help from the Y6 English ambassadors too. The aim of the blog is to share our love of reading and all things books. We have so many children in school who love to read, share their favourite books but needed a platform to do so. Actually, this was a suggestion of a child who left me in Y6 this summer; that we should create a school blog dedicated to the love of books.

To kick things off, I thought I would share some of the texts that we are reading in Maple class - Y6. These are some old favourites of mine and have been loved by children over the years (too many that I care to remember!) for their storytelling and creative ways to hook a reader.

For our class novel this term, we are studying and reading 'Kensuke's Kingdom' by much loved author Michael Morpurgo. This story depicts the adventures of eleven year old Michael, who becomes lost at sea during a voyage around the world with his parents. Michael has to learn to survive against all the odds and try to find a way back to his parents. Along the way, he is faced with many challenges but with the uninhabitable island as a home, will Michael survive? And will he ever find his way home?

This story is always a popular hit with children as they enjoy reading about the twists and turns of survival against the odds but it also reveals a hidden secret about the island; reading the ending is always my favourite part. It is always met with a few tears, a few gasps and an overpowering feeling of compassion for the characters we grow to love as friends.

The next book we are sharing as a reading book is the classic 'Holes' by Louis Sachar. It's such a classic that I had to share the blurb..

The evil warden of the camp (in poisoned red nail polish and prowling snake-skin boots), claims that digging a hole each day is the way to turn a bad boy into a good boy. Every day, Stanley must toil in the blazing sun and dig his own hole. But is that all there is to it – or must Stanley dig up the truth?

Again, this is a great narrative that really hooks the reader into the central characters and Louis Sacher is an expert at creating the perfect cliffhanger. Maple class are enthralled currently as we read this at the end of the day in our class ERIC time (EVERYONE READS IN CLASS).

And finally, I aim to include a Mrs Tuttle recommends section- these are new books that have been recently released or some absolute classics that are must reads for any ages- but are all great for sharing at home. These will be for all year groups.

My first pick is by the fantastic Frank Cottrell Boyce and his novel 'Millions'.

Torn between the vices of buying a million pizzas and the virtues of ending world poverty, the boys soon discover that being rich is a mug's game. For not only is the clock ticking -- the bungling bank robbers are closing in. Pizzas or World Peace, what would you choose

Millions is the humorous tale of a not-so-great train robbery. Damian and Anthony are brothers who unwittingly find themselves in possession of a large amount of money after being caught up in a train robbery.

A fantastic book to read for pleasure or to share at bed time.
